There are now six green building rating systems for North America that reward product transparency. With the increasing demand for products with better environmental performance and material health to build high-performance buildings, it is important to understand all the options for green building certification and how performance is measured to determine which best fits your project.

What is BREEAM?

A science-based holistic program, BREEAM is the most widely used green building program in the world with over 2,274,000 million registered projects and over 565,000 certifications.

BRE, a building science organization with headquarters in England, developed BREEAM in 1990 as the first green building rating system in the world. Most of the other green building rating programs (yes, even the big ones!) use BREEAM as their foundation. BRE is nearly 100 years old and is owned by a charitable trust that puts all the profits back into the education and research that builds its standards.

In 2016, BRE America was launched to bring BREEAM In-Use, the program for existing buildings to the American marketplace. BREEAM In-Use is an online, international, environmental assessment methodology for independent, third party assessment and certification of a building's operational performance. The standard enables property investors, owners, managers and occupiers to drive sustainable improvements through operational efficiency, including how to continually manage the operation of their building effectively.

BREEAM is cost-effective and flexible with no prerequisites. Any building, no matter what size, age or condition can participate.
